The opening
It is the 6th June, and the opening festivities are over. It was a fantastic week, full of excitement and celebration, a week in which a lot of known and unknown people crossed our paths, a week to meet friends and to become friends with new people from all over the world. The festivities started with a reception for the patrons at the bar Naranzaria, next to the bridge Rialto. It was with great pleasure to especially welcome Dame Jenny Gibbs, who was made Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit just before coming to Venice.
It was a beautiful evening and an appropriate occasion to thank all the patrons for their tremendous support. It was very exciting to welcome them in Venice.
The celebrations began the following morning with the blessing of both venues, CNZ held a breakfast for all visitors and guests at Florian’s on St Mark’s square. The powhiri apparently stirred some anger – bare chests are not allowed in Venice. Luckily the police officers didn’t intervene but watched the performances quietly before escorting the dancers back to their hotels to ensure that everybody was properly dressed. It was a fantastic event – many people assured us that the idea of holding the breakfast on St. Mark’s square with a powhiri is very much appreciated by Venetians, as this event is the only one where a nation not simply takes advantage of the hospitality of the city on the lagoon, but also gives something back to their citizens. After the opening of Francis’s exhibition at Fondazione Buziol, the official opening of Judy’s exhibition was held at Chiesa Maddalena. The opening was well attended, a great crowd gathered at Chiesa Maddalena. The end of the official events of the Biennale was marked by tonight’s award’s ceremony in the giardini. Awards were given among others to Bruce Nauman and Tobias Rehberger. Thanks to all the people from Creative New Zealand, thanks to all the people who supported the projects, thanks to all the people back home who sent e-mails, thoughts and best wishes. Safe travels to all who return – see you soon back in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
